In preparation for the launch and expansion of the Safety Delivered program to the Philippines, AIP Foundation traveled to Manila for the months of October and November to launch kick-off meetings with government officials and local schools and begin preparations for upcoming road safety education campaigns and helmet distribution activities for students.

For the 2019-2020 Safety Delivered program in the Philippines, AIP Foundation aims to distribute 2,000 helmets to primary students, with the support of The UPS Foundation, to improve the safety of students on the roads and reduce their risk of road traffic injuries or fatalities.

In formal partnership with the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP), AIP Foundation coordinated discussions with local partners and stakeholders to present Safety Delivered program objectives, activity plans, and the school selection process. AIP Foundation staff also visited potential program schools to see if the schools met program criteria, including their location in a high-risk area and low observed rates of helmet use among children transported to school by motorcycle or bicycle.

For the school selection process, AIP Foundation staff assessed helmet wearing rates among students at potential program schools by conducting helmet observations using a video-based methodology developed in partnership with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). School selection survey forms, which assess the condition of road infrastructure around schools—such as the presence of road signs or usable sidewalks—were also completed in partnership with school representatives.
