In June 2024, the National Assembly of Vietnam approved the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety. The milestone mandates the use of Child Restraint Systems (CRS) for children under 10 years old and under 135cm tall traveling in cars. Additional requirements include that the child must not sit in the same row as the driver, unless the vehicle has a single row of seats, and that the car seat must meet national technical standards. On July 1, this new regulation will now take full effect.
Since the National Assembly’s initial approval of the mandate, AIP Foundation has been facilitating the effective implementation of CRS through its Strengthening the management of high-risk behavioral factors in road safety legislation and traffic safety education program. Supported by the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), the program employs a multi-platform approach to publicize the new regulation and emphasize the importance of using CRS.
From January–March 2026, buses displayed photos with messaging encouraging the usage of CSR in cars on main routes throughout Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City—directly reaching millions of target audience members. In the upcoming months, AIP Foundation will also conduct out-of-home advertising to further enhance the general population’s awareness and understanding of CRS.
Efficacy of child restraint systems
Every year in Vietnam, approximately 2,000 children and young people tragically die on the roads, equivalent to about five deaths per day. Road crashes are a leading cause of death for children both globally and in Vietnam. Child restraint systems (CRS) CRS have been shown to reduce 50% – 80% risk of injury and 47% – 70% risk of deaths amongst infants and child passengers. As such, they are an essential part of the Vietnamese government’s commitment to reduce child road injuries and deaths.
