Community & Collaboration

At AIP Foundation, we envision a world with zero road injuries and deaths. A key to achieving this vision is by focusing on vulnerable communities that are on the frontlines of the world’s mobility crisis:

Every year, 1.19 million lives are lost due to road crashes around the world.
92% of these deaths occur in low-and middle-income countries where vulnerable populations often face the greatest barriers to safe and reliable mobility.

Our human-centered approach prioritizes the real needs, experiences, and challenges of vulnerable communities by considering the diverse ways people use and interact with mobility systems. Through our community-led programs and strategic, multi-sector partnerships, we are driving systemic change by bridging the gap between effective, accountable governance and solutions that involve those who are most greatly affected.

Motorcycle Anti-lock Braking System (M-ABS) Demonstration Event

Improving Motorcycle Safety

Globally, hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists lose their lives each year – with the vast majority of deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries where motorcycles are often the primary mode of transport. Many of these countries still lack effective helmet laws, vehicle safety standards, and widespread access to proven motorcycle safety solutions. To address this, we are leading national coalitions across the region that bring together government, civil society, and industry partners to strengthen policies, improve rider protection, and advance safer two-wheeler mobility.

In Vietnam, our efforts contributed to the adoption of a universal helmet law which has saved more than 46,131 lives, prevented 1.5 million injuries, and saved USD 12.05 billion in medical costs, lost output, and pain and suffering between 2008 and 2025.

Government Capacity Building

Sustainable road safety improvements require strong government leadership, sound policy, and effective enforcement. Through our multi-sector partnerships, we support capacity building for government stakeholders to address key behavioral risk factors contributing to road crashes, including: helmet use, seatbelts, speed, drink-driving, distracted driving, and child restraints.

Our training programs equip police officers, policymakers, and local authorities with the technical knowledge, data tools, and advocacy strategies needed to design and enforce evidence-based interventions. This work has led to stronger local enforcement plans, improved data collection systems, and greater interagency coordination.

Research Collaborations

Robust, data-driven research is essential to developing effective, scalable solutions for road safety and public health. Through collaborations with academic institutions, government agencies, and civil society partners, we help generate evidence that informs policy and addresses the complex, intersecting risks faced by vulnerable road users.

We are collaborating with academic leaders to pioneer a study that investigates how vision impairments affect the safety of young motorcyclists. By assessing the link between vision and crash risk among drivers, we are generating key evidence to strengthen road safety policies, licensing requirements, and improve public safety for road users.
